Not only did the books vary when it came to the theme of paternalism, but as we can see, the severity of punishments was not equal. Charles suffered greatly for crimes he wasn’t even involved in yet he still faced the brunt of the master’s and overseer’s wrath. Rations were a bare minimum for those within the plantation and having the ability to work with fellow slaves to ensure a healthy amount of food was consumed to sustain became a priority.
